What is the difference between a REALTORĀ® and a real estate agent?

Top 5 Things You Need to Know About the REALTORĀ® Trademarks

What is the difference between a REALTOR® and a Real Estate Agent? While both are professionally licensed to help people buy, sell or rent real property, only a REALTOR® is held to a very strict Code of Ethics through the National Association of Realtors (NAR). The designation REALTOR® is reserved only for members of the NAR.

There are many names for real estate professionals, and it can be confusing; Realtor, Broker, salesperson, real estate agent, listing agent, buyer’s agent, even real estate consultant. Oftentimes these titles are used interchangeably, despite distinct differences. Understanding these differences will aid in finding the right professional to suit your needs, whether you are listing your home or looking to buy one.

A Broker is very similar to an agent, in that they represent one party in a transaction. The differences are that the Broker has more education to receive a Broker’s License, they can manage their own company and are responsible for everything their Agents do under their license.

A real estate agent must work for a Broker in order to conduct any real estate transaction and most Brokers require their Agents to be members of the local Association and Multiple Listing Service (MLS). This brings us to REALTORS®; we are held to a very strict Code of Ethics that requires a Fiduciary duty to our clients (YOU). If we do not conduct ourselves ethically, we can be fined and lose our license.

Which person is right for you and your transaction? Again, that depends on what you need, whether you are selling or buying, but you definitely want someone with integrity. Always look for the REALTOR® logo when interviewing an Agent, to be sure you are in the right hands.

There is an excellent article here, that goes into more detail about these differences, I encourage you to take a moment to read it.

We hope you have a very Happy New Year! See you soon.
